A broad overview of an important school of painting that flourished in 18th and 19th century India

India in the 18th and 19th century witnessed a new genre of painting known as Company School, named after the erstwhile British East India Company. The style flourished in different Indian cities like Kolkata (Calcutta), Chennai (Madras), Delhi and Lucknow with the different schools reflecting local indigenous traditions. The lecture will give a broad overview of this school of painting and how the rejection of it by the Nationalist Bengal School in the early 20th century eventually led to the Modern Art Movement in India.
