Redmond PD Gets Drones To Assist In Investigations
Redmond joins other local departments, including Renton and Tukwila, in using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV).
REDMOND, WA — Redmond police are now using drones in investigations, primarily serious traffic crashes, the department says. The drones may also be used in criminal investigations and missing persons cases, however.
The department owns two drones, and one is equipped with a thermal-imaging camera.
"This technology will allow us to complete complex traffic collision investigations in a fraction of the time it currently takes," Capt. Erik Scairpon said in a statement. "The system will lower staffing costs during a major incident, allow us to open roads quicker to lessen traffic impacts, and improve the safety for our officers by not placing them in the roadway."

Redmond joins other local police and fire departments — including Renton, Tukwila, Washington State Patrol, and Eastside Fire and Rescue — in using drones for investigations. Seattle police had a drone program, but ended it in 2013 after public outcry.
To allay privacy concerns, Redmond police will log every flight, and video images will be available through a public records request. Officers using drones will undergo Federal Aviation Administration training and certification, the department said.
