SecondStory Repertory Announces Lineup For New Season

The Redmond theater's 13th season will feature plays, musicals, children's productions and more.

A coat of many colors, a clean-cut quartet of dead singers and all that jazz will grace the stage during ’s 13th season as the theater features six mainstage productions, five productions for young audiences and a host of other entertainment events.

The season’s lineup was announced Friday at a sneak peek event, hosted by executive director . Chenovick took over the position last fall, and the upcoming season marks his first time selecting a slate of shows for the theater.

“Our catchphrase for season 13 is, ‘It’s what we do,’” Chenovick said jokingly Friday, but it's hardly an inaccurate description. Looking at the calendar of events, it’s difficult to come up with something SecondStory isn’t doing next season, from musicals and plays to opera to live music to improv to kid’s programs to cabaret.

The mainstage season will open in August with Molière’s “Tartuffe,” the 17th-century French comedy about a religious hypocrite. Other plays include the madcap Alfred Hitchcock adaptation “The 39 Steps” and Peter Shaffer’s Tony Award-winning “Amadeus,” which approaches the artistic process in a way all artists can relate to, Chenovick said.

“Creating art, creating theater is something all of us involved in think about on a daily basis,” he said.

Musical fans will also have plenty to look forward to, with productions of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” John Kander and Fred Ebb’s “Chicago” and the off-Broadway hit “Forever Plaid,” a revue that features a ’50s guy group coming back from their premature death for another shot at glory. It’s a production that Chenovick has been involved with five times.

“I adore this show,” he said.

In addition to the mainstage musicals, SecondStory will also feature a late-night run of “The Rocky Horror Show” in September.

The theater’s young audience program will grow next season from four shows to five, with children and adults both welcome to see productions of “The Princess and the Pea,” “Rumpelstiltskin,” “Beauty and the Beast" and more.

Season 13 will also feature co-productions with the Pacific Northwest Cabaret Association and the Inverse Opera Company, along with a new season of Split 2nd Improv, which has been at SecondStory since 2007.

But before next season can begin, season 12 finishes up this month with a production of “On Golden Pond,” which runs from June 3 to June 25. Tickets are available for purchase at SecondStory’s website.
