Video Of Redmond PD Arresting Skateboarder Resurfaces

Redmond police are again being criticized for how two officers handled the arrest of a skateboarder. The incident occurred on Jan. 16.

REDMOND, WA — A video from January of two Redmond police officers arresting a skateboarder has resurfaced on social media, and the department is again being criticized for how it handled the incident.

On Jan. 16, two Redmond bike officers stopped a 20-year-old along Northeast 83rd Street, reportedly after he was seen jaywalking. A video of the incident taken by a bystander shows the two officers grabbing the skateboarder's shirt. The officers claim the skateboarder ignored them, and so was arrested for obstruction.

"When we tell you to stop you stop, that's called obstructing everybody. Learn," one of the officers tells the person filming the interaction.

The 20-year-old was charged on May 14 for possession of a controlled substance and obsructing, police said. He was found with psychedelic mushrooms and $500 in cash. Patch has reached out to the King County prosecutor for details on the charges.

In a statement from January, Redmond police said the department investigated the behavior of the two bike officers, but found nothing wrong.

"We have reviewed the video that has been posted online, investigated the arrest, and have found no wrongdoing by the arresting officers. The Redmond Police Department does not arrest people in Redmond for jaywalking, but does arrest individuals who are obstructing," the statement read.
