Waxing 101: The Do's and Don'ts
Thinking about scheduling a wax as the summertime approaches? Look no further for all of your questions about before and aftercare!

This month marks the beginning of summer, signaling warmer temperatures and the peak of waxing season. For those planning a summer vacation or getaway and are considering hair removal methods, we’re here to help answer your questions.
Waxing is an increasingly popular method of hair removal for men and women of various ages. The efficient procedure ensures that over time, hair grows back less frequent and finer when it does come in. Wax can be applied to most surfaces of the body where hair is present and different types of wax may be applied for effective and timely removal.
How long does a wax last?
A standard wax typically lasts anywhere from 2-4 weeks, depending on how often you wax and the rate at which your hair grows back. First time waxes typically do not last as long due to the hair growth cycle that takes place in three stages. Because hair grows in three stages, your first wax will only, typically remove that stage of hair. After regular waxing, most people find that they do not need to wax as often.
What is the hair length requirement?
The ideal length of hair for body waxing is ¼ of an inch to properly grip the hair to be released at the root, rather than surface breakage.

What type of wax is used?
At InSpa, we primarily use hard wax, which is a gentler approach to hair removal where wax hardens on contact and adheres to the hair, not the skin. This approach works well for those with skin sensitivities. However, your esthetician can decide which wax is suitable for your skin and review any concerns you may have. Strip wax is often used for waxing larger areas of hair and at times, thin or more stubborn facial hairs.

Before and aftercare
We do not recommend shaving between waxes as it can interfere with the hair growth cycle. Regular exfoliation between waxes (do not exfoliate directly after) will help reduce the appearance of ingrown hairs and may be recommended by your skin-care professional. We suggest refraining from alcohol prior to your wax appointment as it can create more sensitive skin, however, if you are concerned about pain we recommend an over-the-counter pain reliever before your appointment. InSpa carries an array of natural pre and post-care for those with sensitive skin, as well as a stronger formula that works to exfoliate and prevent ingrown hair.
Avoid direct contact with the sun or tanning beds for at least 24 hrs before or after a wax. If you are taking any medication or topical treatments that contain Retin-A or Retinol, antibiotics, blood thinners, or strong acne treatments, we recommend refraining from use for 1-3 weeks. Waxing while using these medications or products to can lead to abrasions caused by the hair removal process.
