After Christmas, Police Warn To Be Careful With Boxes

RENTON, WA - If you were a good boy or girl this year, your recycling bin might be overflowing with cardboard boxes right now - be it a box for a giant flat-screen TV or for something practical, like a box for a pair of Air Jordans.

But local police are warning residents to be careful with showing off evidence of what you got for Christmas because thieves might use it as a reason to break into your home.

Local police have been promoting the "Be wise, don't advertise" concept recently, warning residents to be inconspicuous about gifts. That can even extend to social media, where some people post photos of what Santa brought.

Renton Police on Tuesday morning posted a photo on Twitter of a extraordinarily conspicuous recycling bin packed with empty boxes for expensive electronics and other goods.

"Break down the boxes from recent purchases so thieves don't have a shopping list of what they're looking for!" the post read.
