Changes Coming To I-405, SR 167 Interchange In Renton

As early as May 20, there's going to be a big change at the I-405 and SR 167 interchange in Renton.

RENTON, WA - A ramp connecting southbound I-405 to Sr 167 and Rainier Avenue South near downtown Renton will go through some changes, possibly as soon as May 20. Right now, exits 2A and 2B are separated by a barrier. State crews will remove that barrier and combine the exit lanes into one. That means drivers heading to SR 167 southbound will have to aim for the farthest right lane for the foreseeable future.

The change is happening so that construction crews can make way for a new flyover ramp that will connect the SR 167 HOV toll lane to the I-405 HOV lane.

WSDOT is predicting that this lane shift won't have too big an impact on traffic, but might cause some delays.

"After we built an off-ramp to Talbot Road South several years ago, the volume of traffic using the Rainier Avenue South ramp dropped to around 200 to 300 vehicles per hour. We don't expect major backups as a result of this change, but there may be some minor slowdowns in the area as drivers adjust to the new configuration," WSDOT wrote in a blog post about the change.

The project to connect the I-405 and SR 167 HOV lanes with a flyover is expected to finish up in 2019, and WSDOT expects the exit 2A/2B combination to last for "several months."
