Dog Dies After Pit Bull Attack At Renton Community Center

A Renton officer was able to restrain the pit bull and stop the attack, but the Shih Tzu did not survive.

RENTON, WA — A Renton police officer jumped on a pit bull in the midst of a brutal attack at the Highlands Community Center over the weekend. This is the second pit bull attack in Renton since late April, according to police.

The latest attack happened on Saturday around 11 a.m. Renton police were attending an event at the community center when they were told about the attack happening in the park. Officers arrived to find a brown pit bull attacking a Shih Tzu dog. One officer jumped on the pit bull and put the dog in a choke hold, allowing the smaller dog to get away.

Renton firefighters responded to treat the Shih Tzu, but it died at the scene.

Police found out that the pit bull had escaped from a nearby yard. The dog was impounded by police, and the owners are facing criminal charges.

On April 24, a pit bull attacked a chiweenie dog name Larry near Wells Avenue North and North 4th Street. Larry was severely injured, but survived. The dog in that attack was not caught, and police believe it may be the same one that was impounded in 2017 after an attack. The dog was freed from the pound after someone broke in and stole it, and it's been at-large ever since.
