RENTON, WA — Tuesday, Aug. 3, is Election Day in King County, and all primary ballots are due by 8 p.m. sharp. According to King County Elections data, less than 17 percent of the county's 1.4 million registered voters had returned their ballots by Monday evening, but officials project voter turnout will hit 40 percent by the time every ballot is counted. Despite a three-week voting window, elections officials expected that more than half of the primary ballots cast this year would be returned between Monday and Tuesday.

More than 200 candidates are part of this year's primary, and voters will decide which two will move on to November in local city council elections, mayoral contests, and the King County Executive race. A few communities were a little ahead of the turnout curve Monday, including Mercer Island, (21.02%), Clyde Hill (19.64%), Bellevue (18.46%) and Issaquah (18.37%).

There is still plenty of time for last-minute voters to make their voice heard, but officials caution against relying on mailboxes Tuesday, as Friday was the last day recommended to mail ballots to ensure an on-time postmark. However, several dozen drop boxes around King County remain open for the last day of voting and will accept ballots until polls close promptly at 8 p.m. on Aug. 3. Residents also have the option to visit one of King County's vote centers, which can also register new voters and provide replacement ballots up to the last minute.
