Fundraiser For Renton Police Employee Facing Cancer Fight

Jackie Thomas will undergo surgery to remove a tumor, but will have to miss work for up to three months.

RENTON, WA - Longtime Renton police employee Jackie Thomas is facing an uphill battle against stage four cancer, and so the Renton Police Guild has established a fundraiser to help her pay for a potentially long recovery.

Last May, doctors discovered Thomas had a malignant tumor, which later metastasized and spread to her liver. Thomas underwent surgery in September to remove a portion of her liver, but she had to use up all her sick leave and savings during that recovery.

She is now being treated with chemotherapy, which is expected to shrink the remaining tumor small enough to be operated on. Once it's time for that surgery, Thomas will be in recovery - and out of work - for up to three months.

"There will be out-of-pocket expenses coupled with a potential loss of income that hinders Jackie’s ability to meet her family’s day-to-day bills and expenses. Jackie is the sole income provider for herself and her husband Fred. She has a loving family including five grandchildren. Jackie is a mentor and friend to all who meet her in her personal life and through the Renton Police Department," reads the GoFundMe fundraiser page.

The Renton Police Guild is aiming to raise $25,000 for Thomas. As of Wednesday, the fundraiser had raised just over $5,000. Thomas works as a police services specialist.
