Renton Hazmat Crew Response To Green River Petroleum Spill
The spill was discovered Tuesday afternoon in a section of the Green River that cuts through industrial Kent.

TUKWILA, WA - Hazmat crews from Renton, Tukwila, and Kent were working Tuesday afternoon to contain a petroleum sheen discovered along the Green River. The spill starts in the area of 196th Street in Kent, but hazmat crews have placed a second boom as far north as Strander Boulevard in Tukwila to catch the substance as it flows toward Puget Sound.
Puget Sound Fire Capt. Kyle Ohashi said that the hazmat crews were wrapping up work just before 4 p.m. as state Department of Ecology officials arrived to take over. The fire crews were unable to find where the sheen was coming from. The section of the Green River near 196th Street contains a number of commercial warehouses and industrial companies.
Ohashi said that King County's Guardian 1 helicopter flew over the river to try and find the source of the sheen. There have been no reports of human or animal deaths or injuries associated with the sheen, Ohashi said.
