Rainier Avenue Sinkhole In Renton Back For Revenge

The famous Renton sinkhole needs further repairs, and officials are warning to expect traffic delays.

RENTON, WA - The infamous Renton sinkhole is back to take revenge on rush hour drivers.

Thankfully, the sinkhole along the 900 block of Rainier Avenue has not reopened. But city crews have to do some repaving in the sinkhole area over the next few days, and traffic delays are likely. The repaving area is north of the St. Vincent De Paul store near the border with Lakeridge/Bryn Mawr.

Construction crews began the repaving work Tuesday at 7 a.m. Repaving should last until around 4:30 p.m. each day through Friday. The city warned that construction could continue beyond 4:30 p.m. on some days, which would eat into rush hour traffic.

The sinkhole was discovered in early February, appearing as a small hole in the pavement. But when crews pulled back the asphalt, they found a large pit that was 15 feet deep in some places. Repair work took more than two days, clogging a major artery between Renton and Seattle.
