Renton To Consider Ban On Safe-Injection Sites
On Monday night, the Renton City Council might decide to ban safe-use injection sites.

RENTON, WA - Renton might become the latest King County city to ban safe injection sites. The City Council on Monday night will consider an ordinance banning the facilities, which allow drug users to use drugs under medical supervision. The safe-injection sites have been proposed as a solution to stop overdose deaths. In 2016, 332 people died of drug overdoses in King County, and an estimated 75 percent of those deaths were opioid-related.
"Resolution 4317 would oppose the siting of illegal substance injection facilities within Renton City limits or within areas of incorporated King County associated with the potential annexation areas or urban growth areas of the City of Renton," according to a city news release.
King County and Seattle are working to open two such facilities - one in Seattle, and another located in a county city with high overdose deaths.
