Renton Drivers Run Red Lights At 'Abnormally High' Rate: Police

Renton drivers are so bad at stopping for red lights, police are extending the red light camera grace period.

RENTON, WA - Renton drivers, you run too many red lights. So many that the police department will hold off on handing out red light camera tickets for another few weeks.

The city has installed three red light cameras at three particularly bad intersections, but police don't think drivers have noticed the cameras yet. Police are giving drivers another two weeks, but then tickets will start flying.

Police said the cameras have recorded an "abnormally high" number of drivers running red lights since they were installed May 1.

“Our number one goal is to make everyone safer. We want to make sure everyone knows about these intersections and how dangerous they are and adjust their driving habits before they get to the point they are receiving citations," Renton Police Commander Karlewicz said in a press release.

The cameras are located at these Renton intersections:

  • South Puget Drive and Talbot Road South
  • Park Avenue North and Logan Avenue North
  • Talbot Road South and South Grady Way

Drivers have until June 13 to get used to the cameras - after that, running a light will cost you $124 a pop.
