RENTON, WA — A natural gas leak in the Maplewood Heights area prompted a response from the fire department Wednesday morning. A battalion chief and a hazmat team arrived on the 13200 block of 156th Avenue Southeast, just a few blocks from Fire Station 16, just after 9:30 a.m.

A fire department spokesperson said crews reported two or three punctures in a gas main and worked quickly to cordon off the area and eliminate ignition sources. Utility crews from Puget Sound Energy arrived shortly before 10 a.m. to help contain the leak.

Firefighters said evacuations were limited, primarily affecting the home nearest the puncture and wider impacts were not expected.
