Renton Man Dies After 100-Foot Fall Off Cliff

The 61-year-old was hiking near Snoqualmie Pass over the weekend.

RENTON, WA - A 61-year-old man from Renton died over the weekend after falling off a cliff in the Cascades near Snoqualmie Pass. The man was found Saturday near Chair Peak.

The man went hiking on Friday, but failed to return home. His wife called authorities around 6 p.m. A search team located his body on Saturday morning, assessing that he had fallen about 100 feet.

High winds prevented King County's Guardian 2 helicopter from reaching the man. Search crews spent about four hours hiking to reach the man.

Multiple hikers have died or gone missing in 2018. In late August, a hiker from Lynnwood was found dead near Blanca Lake in the Cascades. In June, a 31-year-old man from Shoreline died after falling off a cliff near Pratt Lake. In August, 44-year-old James E. Rothwell of Seattle died after a fall on Buck Mountain in the North Cascades.

Samantha Sayers went missing in July during a hike on Vesper Peak in Snohomish County. Police called off the search on Aug. 1, but Sayers' family continues to search for her.
