RENTON, Wash. – The RTC Foundation Scholarship Breakfast raised more than $30,000. It is the highest grossing scholarship breakfast to date.

More than 180 people gathered on RTC’s campus last week with Angela Russell, former KIRO TV news anchor. Attendees heard moving testimonials from student and alumni speakers sharing the impact RTC has made on their lives.

Seong Unti, 2009 RTC Anesthesia Technician Program Graduate, attributed much of her professional success to the training she received at RTC, sharing “RTC taught me more than simply technical skills. I also gained leadership skills through [the] program.” Unti is one of five RTC graduates fulfilling a total of eight Anesthesia Technician positions for Renton’s Valley Medical Center.

Current student BreeAnn Loya, who will graduate this June, echoes those sentiments and encouraged the attendees to help students pursuing their dreams. She quoted Jack Canfield, stating “everything you want is on the other side of fear”, and encouraged guests not to let fear stand in the way of any of RTC’s stars.

Loya attributes her first Foundation scholarship to leading her to community and states that “through all of this I found my voice, I found my confidence and I am building my leadership skills.” Filling the role of Foundation Scholar, Phi Theta Kappa Member, Student Scholar and most recently Foundation Board Member, Loya is committed to helping other students find their voice.

Before the morning closed, Renton Mayor, Denis Law proclaimed May 13, 2015 as Bridging the Gap Day Where Dreams Come True, as Renton Technical College Foundation has paved the way for many a student who did not believe in themselves before entering the doors of Renton Technical College, many coming from low income families and diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Keynote Speaker, Marcie Maxwell, closed the event by stating that education equals smart investments for students, and even smarter investments for the rest of us. Through her expertise as the Senior Policy Advisor to Governor Jay Inslee, she shared that what people think success looks like and what it really looks like are two very different things. She reiterated that simply, just as it did for BreeAnn, life can sometimes get in the way. She encouraged guests to support the great work of RTC and today’s students who are the tomorrow’s future.

More information on the breakfast and speakers can be found at www.rtc.edu/breakfast.

The annual fundraiser was underwritten by generous donations from the community. These partners ensured that all money raised during the scholarship breakfast goes to support the Foundation’s scholarship program.
