Simple Ways To Prevent Dark Days From Affecting Your Mood

Summer means warmer days for many. But with the arrival of Autumn, not only do the leaves drop but so does the mood of many. What now?

Summer fun means long lasting brighter days, warm temperatures, gatherings, and non-stop fun. However, too often time passes quickly and before we know it summer has come to an end and Autumn rolls in. For many, this is a welcome arrival with the falling of leaves and the beautiful coloring that moves in. Others may find that changing weather means the challenge of keeping their moods chipper. Consistently remaining aware that this is a possibility, and taking necessary steps to ward off this risk can become less concerning with a few simple steps.

Rest- When did the idea that we must always be doing something come in to play? Why do some feel guilty when they do not have a full schedule? Rest is just as important as doing activities, and failure to acquire enough eventually catches up with you. Irritability, weakened immune system, weight loss, and much more are just a few challenges one may encounter when sleep deprived. For most adults an average of 7 hours or more of nightly sleep is recommended. A well taken care of body shows by allowing you to perform at your peak. Start today by seeing what steps you can take towards the goal of achieving more restful nights.

Play Music- Something about hearing one of your favorite songs can change your mood in a heartbeat. Music is universal, and so calming. It can help your blood pressure, increase your awareness, bring on self confidence and so much more. Pull up your favorite play list, or grab that vinyl record. Whatever your personal choice, relaxing and allowing the peaceful sounds of music to enter your surroundings, can elevate your enjoyment to new heights.

Go Outdoors- Just because the weather isn't the best, doesn't mean you can't be at yours. No matter what the weather, you can make it a point to open the windows, allow fresh air to come in, or step outside for a period of time. It can be for as long as you like, or as short as 15 minutes. But, allow the day to welcome you, and appreciate the light. We need fresh air and it helps us thrive. Take a short walk around your neighborhood, or along your favorite trail taking in the beautiful scenery or while listening to the chirping of the birds. Bring your pet along with you, but this can become the perfect time to relax, release some of the anxiety you've been carrying and feel free once again.

Write- You don't have to be the best writer to put thoughts on paper. Use your favorite journal, or if you don't have one just start with some loose leaf paper and take a few minutes to write down how you feel. Perhaps you have been thinking about something you would like to plan, or maybe there is a particular situation you are struggling with and cannot find the right words for. No matter what direction you are heading in, there are always concerns dancing around in your head. No time like the present to take a closer look at them.

Color- Who says coloring is just for kids? Well, there are many adult coloring books that prove otherwise. Coloring is a relaxing activity that many of us tend to forget about. Grab a great book, a fabulous set of crayons and see what you can come up with. With all the fabulous color out there, you may just be able to create some unexpected design.

Declutter- While many of us have a room that needs attention, or that extra drawer that is bulging with items that need to be tossed, we just never seem to make time to give these areas the necessary cleaning they need. When the weather changes and we are inside more, it is the perfect time to reclaim your home as your sanctuary. Do a little at a time, and slowly start removing the unwanted things. Bring the items you love once again to the forefront. This is your space, and it should make you happy, proud, and feel comfortable to be there.

Make Your Bucket List-It is never too late to continue dreaming, and setting goals to make things happen is a must. What is the special activity you have thought about participating in? Is there something that only happens during the cooler months that you have wanted to engage in? Whatever those things are, stop putting them off, write them down and figure out how to make it happen. If you are not sure what steps to take, find someone than can provide you with the answers and be on your way.

While the seasons may bring about a change that does not feel welcoming for some, by making some simple adjustments your darker days can become a time of pure enjoyment.
