Weigh-In On Cedar Hills Landfill Expansion Now
The county's biggest landfill will probably get bigger. King County is seeking feedback on expansion options for Cedar Hills.
RENTON, WA — The 920-acre Cedar Hill landfill east of Renton is about to get bigger, and King County this week began taking feedback from citizens on how that should happen.
The King County Council on April 24 voted 5-2 to approve the 2019 Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan, including legislation allowing Cedar Hills expansion. Alternatives like a waste-to-energy plant or shipping waste outside King County were thought to be too costly and worse for the environment than a landfill expansion. Cedar Hills has been the main dump for 37 cities in King County since 1965, and its expansion probably mean stacking garbage higher.
The county will hold a "scoping" meeting for expansion on Aug. 12 at the King County Library System Service Center, 960 Newport Way NW, Issaquah. The county is also accepting comments through a special website.

There are three options on the table for expansion. All include a combination of raising the height of the garbage and opening up a new landfill area in the southeast corner of Cedar Hills.
