SEATTLE, WA — The second round of votes in the Aug. 6 King County primary election have been counted, showing which candidates in races from Shoreline to Seattle to Soos Creek are likely headed to the November general election.

As of Wednesday afternoon, King County had counted 333,667 ballots, which is about 25 percent turnout. But 449,178 had been returned as of Wednesday, which means turnout is closer to 34 percent. King County Elections predicted about 36 percent turnout for the whole primary.

  • The King County Parks Levy was ahead with 68.3 percent support. The Seattle Library Levy was also leading with 74.1 percent in favor.
  • Seattle Councilwoman Lisa Herbold took a commanding lead in her race taking 48 percent of the vote.
  • Socialist Seattle Councilwoman Kshama Sawant was in the lead in her District 3 race at 34 percent with Seattle Chamber of Commerce candidate Egan Orion in second place at 23.1 percent.
  • One major surprise in the King County Council District 2 race: first-time candidate Girmay Zahilay was ahead of incumbent Larry Gossett 53.8 to 38.1 percent.
  • The race to replace longtime Renton Mayor Denis Law was still very close with Councilman Armondo Pavone ahead of Marcie Maxwell 27.6 to 27 percent — a difference of 63 votes.
  • In the open race for outgoing Bellevue Mayor John Chelminiak's seat, Jeremy Barksdale was leading Stephanie Walter 58.2 to 37.3 percent.
  • Redmond Councilwoman Angela Birney was ahead of challenger Steve Fields in the mayoral primary 54 to 35 percent.

The results below are preliminary. King County Elections will release new vote totals each afternoon, and the election won't be certified until Aug. 20. Only the top two candidates in each contested race will advance to the November general election.
