Today's riddle: What did one wall say to the other? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Bite of Seattle shooting report reveals elected officials distracted police from getting information out (mynorthwest.com) — Seattle residents are learning new details about how officials handled communications after the deadly July 26 Bite of Seattle shooting, with an SPD report saying elected leaders distracted officers from getting timely safety information out. The review praises officers' rapid response but urges clearer roles, better public-information protocols, drones for major incidents, and more staffing for large events.
2. Former Seattle Council President Launches OpenCityHall.ai for Transparent Local Government Access (webpronews.com) — Seattle residents now have a new way to keep tabs on City Hall through OpenCityHall.ai, an AI-powered platform launched by former council president Lorena González. The nonprofit site automatically summarizes meetings, tracks council votes, and links directly to public records, aiming to make budget debates, zoning changes, and other complex decisions easier to follow and question in real time.
3. Seattle Public Schools limits screen time, ends individual tablets for K-2 students (king5.com) — Families in Seattle Public Schools should expect big changes for K-2 classrooms, as the district will end one-to-one tablets and cap daily screen time at about 30 minutes by January 1. Leaders say shared devices and more hands-on learning will better match child-development research, while saving money from the voter-approved technology levy and guiding future tech policies in upper grades.
4. King County proposes one-cent sales tax for shelter, housing plan (seattletimes.com) — King County leaders are proposing a one-cent sales tax to help fund hundreds of new shelter beds and affordable housing units, including projects in Seattle's Central District and Chinatown International District. For Seattle residents, this could mean more tiny homes, a permanent downtown family shelter, and expanded youth homelessness services, even as the city wrestles with its own budget shortfalls.
5. Entre Hermanos: 35 Years of Community, Culture, and Resilience (bizjournals.com) — A longtime Seattle-based Latine LGBTQ+ nonprofit is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a Día de Muertos gala at the Sheraton Grand Seattle on October 24. Entre Hermanos, founded in Seattle in 1991, now serves communities statewide, offering HIV prevention, legal help, and cultural programming while inviting locals to support its future work at this milestone event.
