1. Remembering Dolores Sibonga, former City Councilmember and former West Seattleite (westseattleblog.com) — Seattle is remembering former City Councilmember Dolores Sibonga, a pioneering Filipino-American leader who also called West Seattle home and championed neighborhood landmarks like the Admiral Theater. Local historian Clay Eals recalls her advocacy, her move to the peninsula in the 1980s, and her recently published memoir, while plans for a community celebration of her life are still being arranged.
2. Mental evaluation ordered for suspect in violent forehead biting (fox13seattle.com) — A downtown Seattle woman is undergoing more medical procedures after a stranger allegedly bit a chunk from her forehead near 3rd and Cherry Street, in an unprovoked daytime attack. The suspect remains jailed while a court-ordered mental evaluation is completed, with a second-degree assault case continuing and the victim seeking community help through a GoFundMe for her recovery.
3. First Amtrak Airo passenger trains start Wednesday on Cascades (lynnwoodtimes.com) — New Amtrak Airo trains start running through Seattle on the Cascades route Wednesday, bringing more seats, cleaner engines, and upgraded amenities for local riders. Two of the new trainsets will handle four daily trips serving Seattle, including morning runs to Vancouver, B.C. and Eugene and afternoon returns, with dynamic fares and discounts available online or at station ticket offices.
4. Sewage spill will keep a Seattle beach closed (bellinghamherald.com) — Matthews Beach Park on Lake Washington in Seattle is closed to swimming and boating after about 18,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the lake late Saturday. Seattle Public Utilities stopped the overflow that night but urges people and pets to avoid the water through October 3 while crews test conditions and monitor bacteria levels.
5. 'People could be really cruel': Woman who survives bite attack speaks out about online harassment (kiro7.com) — A Seattle woman recovering from a brutal downtown bite attack is now also dealing with harsh online comments about her injuries and choices. The suspect, charged with second-degree assault and under hate-crime investigation, has been ordered to undergo a mental competency evaluation and is due back in court October 13 as the victim continues healing and raising recovery funds.
