Attempted Rape At Golden Gardens Park In Ballard: Report

The attack happened on Sunday afternoon at Golden Gardens Park in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood.

SEATTLE, WA - A convicted sex offender allegedly tried to rape a woman at Golden Gardens Park on Sunday afternoon, according to a new report.

A 36-year-old woman was using the restroom on Sunday when a man approached her and began attacking her, according to KOMO News. The woman managed to fight him off and get away, however.

KIRO 7 identified the woman as Kelly Herron, and reported that Herron used training she learned in a self-defense class to fight off the attacker.

Police responded and allegedly found Gary Steiner, 40, locked inside a stall in the bathroom. Steiner has been previously charged with indecent exposure and sexual abuse in Arizona, according to KOMO.

On Wednesday, Steiner was charged in King County with second-degree attempted rape. Steiner allegedly told a Seattle police detective that he went to Golden Gardens intending to rape a woman.

Steiner is being held on $750,000 bond, according to King County court records.
