Biological Safety Standards
Biological safety standards help health professionals and researchers identify hazardous materials and minimize risk.
The American Biological Safety Association (ABSA) is dedicated to furthering biological safety expertise. This organization helps biosafety professionals, such as microbiologists, engineers, molecular biologists, veterinarians, and health professionals, by performing the following activities:
- Identifying potentially hazardous biological materials
- Outlining the risks associated with using these materials
- Giving guidelines to minimize risk and to protect against or prevent release/exposure
Specifically, the ABSA sets labs standards to ensure the working environments are safe. This organization has defined four biosafety levels for working with different materials in the lab.
