Bremerton Earthquakes: Magnitude 3.6 Hits Overnight

Another relatively strong earthquake hit near Bremerton late Wednesday night.

BREMERTON, WA - The swarm of earthquakes under the waters off Bremerton continued late Wednesday night. A magnitude 3.6 earthquake hit at around 11:30 p.m., which is the third quake above a magnitude 3 to hit over the last week. The quake follows a magnitude 3.4 that hit just after midnight Wednesday.

The two quakes on Wednesday are among dozens that have shook at the western edge of the Seattle fault in waters off Bremerton. The quakes are all happening underneath the water between Enetai and Manchester.

It's unclear what is causing the activity near Bremerton, but Bill Steele of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network told KING 5 last week that seismologists believe the swarm of quakes might be related to activity along the Seattle fault. The Seattle fault has the potential to create a magnitude 7 earthquake; the Seattle fault zone runs all the way from the southern end of Lake Sammamish, through central Seattle, and ends near Bremerton.
