CFDA-SE Labeling Protocol - Research Techniques for Your Lab

Learn how to use CFDA-SE to stain and label your cells to measure cell division.

CFDA-SE is a common way to measure cell divisions. If you've never used this technique in your lab, follow our detailed protocol in the graphic below.

The CFDA-SE works by permeating the cell membrane where it reacts to amine groups on proteins and creates a stable, long-lasting fluorescent label. When the cells divide, the label is passed on to the daughter cells but is half as bright, allowing you to predictably calculate the number of divisions using a flow cytometer, FCS Express, or other software.

The infographic below outlines the materials needed and the procedures to follow for accurate cell division tracking.
