SEATTLE, WA — The Coast Guard, joined by state and local agencies, worked to contain a large fuel spill Thursday at the Shell terminal on Harbor Island. According to the Coast Guard, an employee at the terminal contacted them at 6 a.m. and reported a pump failure.

The Coast Guard said the pump that failed had more than 160,000 gallons of gasoline when it failed at midnight, and nearly 7,000 gallons spilled. Fortunately, crews contained the spill before it could reach the nearby Duwamish River and no impacts to the water were found.

A Coast Guard response vessel monitored marine traffic in the area and anticipated moving into the final cleanup phase by 4 p.m. The response at the scene included members of the Washington State Department of Ecology, Seattle Fire and Shell.
