Eastrail Celebration Wednesday In Woodinville

State lawmakers will celebrate the opening of the newest section of the Eastrail system Wednesday and highlight new project funding.

WOODINVILLE, WA — State lawmakers will be in Woodinville Wednesday morning to celebrate millions in funding secured for the Eastrail system, which was included in the nearly $17 billion Move Ahead Washington transportation package approved in the statehouse earlier this year.

The Eastrail will serve as the north-south spine of the larger Leafline system, with sections serving cyclists and pedestrians around Renton, Redmond, Bellevue, Kirkland, Woodinville and Snohomish.

State Sen. Marko Liias, Rep. Jake Fey and Rep. Vandana Slatter are scheduled to deliver remarks at Wilmot Gateway Park, along with representatives from Eastrail Partners. After the speech, attendees are invited to take a short bike ride to the newest completed section of the Eastrail, which connects Kirkland's Totem Lake neighborhood to Woodinville.

Last year Amazon donated $7.5 million to help overhaul the 117-year-old Wilburton Trestle, which is scheduled to welcome pedestrians and cyclists to take in the views at 100 feet sometime in 2024.

The new state funds will also help contractors build trail connections through Bellevue, retrofit Interstate 90's steel bridge, extend the trail system further south to Renton's Gene Coulon Park, and retrofit the trestle over State Route 202 for a future connection to downtown Woodinville. Once complete, the Eastrail will connect Puget Sound communities across 42 miles of uninterrupted trail from Renton to Snohomish County.
