SEATTLE — A serious crash on Interstate 5 Friday morning left two people with serious injuries and several northbound lanes blocked near Northgate.

Washington State Patrol and Seattle firefighters arrived at the crash scene shortly before 9:30 a.m. and found a van that had rolled over a barrier and caught fire near Northeast 117th Street.

Trooper Rick Johnson said a preliminary investigation revealed the van broke over a concrete barrier and landed in a construction zone. Sound Transit and Seattle Department of Transportation workers quickly broke the vehicle's windows and pulled two people to safety. Though both were conscious and alert, Johnson said they suffered serious burns.
