Filing Week 2017: Here Are All The King County Candidates

SEATTLE, WA - Filing week for 2017 King County races ended at 4:30 p.m. Friday, and that means we now have a final list of everyone who's running in local, state, or county-wide races. Believe it or not, this election year is looking competitive. There are a number of local city council races - we're looking at you Mercer Island and Renton - that have attracted a lot of candidates. The 45th Legislative District race is also a hot one to watch because it will decide the balance of the state Senate; there are fewer candidates in the race than expected, however, with former Northshore school board member Ken Smith's withdrawal.

At the King County level, Sheriff John Urquhart is facing a challenge from within the department: Maj. Mitzi Johanknecht. If Johanknecht wins, she would be the first openly gay King County Sheriff. County Executive Dow Constantine is being challenged by anti-light rail campaigner Bill Hirt, and Stan Lippmann, who ran for county executive in 2009. Oh, and Goodspaceguy is also in that race.

And if you're not interested in your own local races, there's quite a party going on in Seattle. Twenty-one people are running for mayor with no real clear front-runner ... yet.
