Full 520 Bridge Closure Scheduled This Weekend
State Route 520 will be closed in both directions between Seattle and the Eastside this weekend as crews place more than two dozen girders.

SEATTLE — Many drivers heading between Seattle and the Eastside will need to plan alternate routes this weekend, while State Route 520 closes in both directions over Lake Washington. Beginning Friday night, The Washington State Department of Transportation will fully close the freeway between Seattle and Medina, allowing contractors to begin installing more than two dozen girders for the new Montlake lid.
The closure is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. Friday, and the route will reopen in time for the Monday morning commute.

The latest round of work is part of WSDOT's broader, $455 million SR 520 Montlake Project, which includes a three-acre, landscaped "lid" over the freeway to add new green space and better serve pedestrians and cyclists.

This summer, contractors are focused on extending the lid eastward, and by the end of the year they are scheduled to begin working west. The weekend work will see crews placing 28 large girders, which will form the "backbone" of the structure. Residents can also follow their work via four live webcams.
