Go Inside Bertha's SR 99 Tunnel: WSDOT Releases Interactive Video

Take a 360-degree tour of the new SR 99 tunnel under Seattle.

SEATTLE, WA - The Washington State Department of Transportation has released a new interactive video that allows you to take a 360-degree tour of the SR 99 tunnel under Seattle.

The tunnel boring machine Bertha has been digging the tunnel for years (counting delays), but it's very close to the finish line. Bertha will be done drilling by May, according to the most recent estimates.

As of Friday, Bertha only had about 800 feet left to dig, which is about two blocks from the finish line near Denny Way. Bertha dug over 938 feet in February alone, so it's possible the boring machine will substantially finish before May.

However, there's still a lot of work to be done. In this new video from WSDOT, you can see all the work that's being done behind Bertha. Crews are constructing a double-decker roadway in Bertha's wake. The video allows you to take a virtual tour of the tunnel as it stands. As the video plays, use your mouse to move around to get a 360 view of the tunnel.
