Ichiro Off Mariners Roster, Into Front Office

The Mariners announced a new role for Ichiro Suzuki on Thursday morning.

SEATTLE, WA - The Mariners announced Thursday morning that outfielder Ichiro Suzuki will leave the roster to join staff in the front office. Suzuki rejoined the Mariners at the beginning of the 2018 season.

The Mariners released the following statement on Ichiro's new role:

Mariners General Manager Jerry Dipoto today announced that Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki is transitioning to the role of Special Assistant to the Chairman, effective today.
Right-handed pitcher Erik Goeddel has been selected from AAA Tacoma to fill Ichiro’s spot on the Major League, 25-man, roster.
In his new role, Ichiro will continue to be an active presence with the Major League club, both at home in Seattle and on the road.

Suzuki's final game with the Mariners was Wednesday night in Seattle. The Mariners lost to the Oakland Athletics. Suzuki, 44, scored one run in three at-bats. He ended his 2018 season with five runs, nine hits, and a .205 batting average.
