Jenny Durkan Calls For Murray To Resign

After a fifth accusation of sexual abuse against Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, candidate Jenny Durkan calls for his resignation.

SEATTLE, WA - Mayoral candidate Jenny Durkan, who just a few months ago accepted an endorsement from Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, is calling for the mayor to step down. Durkan made the call about 1-1/2 hours after the Seattle Times reported that Murray's cousin has stepped forward to accuse the mayor of sexual abuse.

"It is time for Mayor Murray to step down. I previously urged the Mayor to reflect deeply about whether he could continue to lead and what was in the best interests of the city. It's clear that it is in everyone’s best interest for him to resign. As a parent, former public official and openly gay woman these allegations are beyond sad and tragic; no official is above the law," she said in a statement.

As of 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, Murray's endorsement of Durkan still appeared on her website. Murray endorsed Durkan on June 29 and simultaneously announced he would not pursue a write-in campaign.

"I’ve known Jenny for almost three decades. We worked together during the dark days of the anti-LGBT initiative in the ’90s. We worked together in her role as U.S. Attorney on police reform," Murray said in his endorsement.
