A Long Drive to Seattle Inspired a Smarter Way to Find the Right Massage
After arriving in Seattle exhausted from a long drive, I discovered that the hardest part wasn't finding a massage -it was knowing which one
Recently, I took a road trip from the San Francisco Bay Area to Vancouver, British Columbia, with Seattle as one of my stops.
After spending nearly six hours behind the wheel that day, my shoulders were tight, my lower back was sore, and I could definitely feel the fatigue from sitting in the driver’s seat for so long.
I knew I needed a massage.

What surprised me wasn’t how difficult it might be to find one.
It was that I didn’t even know what kind of massage I should be looking for.

Should it be Swedish?
Deep tissue?
Thai?
Sports massage?
Like many people, I’d heard the names before, but I honestly didn’t know which one was the best choice after spending an entire day driving.
That simple realization inspired me to think differently about how people search for beauty and wellness services.
We Search by How We Feel, Not by Service Names
Instead of trying to figure out which massage technique I needed, I opened a new feature we’ve been building for Spa Salon Finder.
Rather than asking me to choose from a long list of massage types, it simply asked me to describe how I was feeling.
So I typed:
“I’m so tired after driving to Seattle for six hours. Where can I get a good massage?”
Within seconds, it recommended a relaxing Swedish massage, explaining that it could help relieve muscle tension and fatigue after a long drive.
That recommendation immediately made sense.
I didn’t search for a Swedish massage.
I searched for how I felt.
The system translated my situation into a service recommendation.
That felt far more natural than expecting me to understand the differences between every type of massage before I could even begin my search.
Finding the Right Business
Once I accepted the recommendation, I clicked Show Me Salons.
Spa Salon Finder searched nearby massage businesses that offered Swedish massage, allowing me to explore local options instead of starting from scratch.
When I found a few businesses I liked, I used the Book for Me feature.
The booking concierge contacted the businesses on my behalf, checked availability, and secured an appointment without me having to call multiple places while I was traveling.
The entire process took only a few minutes.
Instead of spending my time researching massage techniques, searching business after business, and making phone calls, I was able to focus on enjoying the rest of my trip.
It Made Me Think
As I drove away after my appointment, I realized this wasn’t really just about massage.
It made me think about how we search for beauty and wellness services in general.
Most people don’t begin by knowing the name of the service they need.
They begin with a situation.
“My shoulders are sore after a long drive.”
“I have a wedding next weekend.”
“I start a new job on Monday.”
“I just want to relax.”
The goal comes first.
The service comes second.
That’s the direction we’re taking with Spa Salon Finder.
Rather than expecting people to know every treatment or service by name, we’re building a search experience that starts with what people are trying to accomplish and helps connect them with the right local businesses—whether that’s a massage, a haircut, nail care, skin care, or another wellness service.
To me, that’s how local search should work.
Instead of making people figure out what to ask for, we should first understand what they’re trying to accomplish and then help them discover the local businesses that can make it happen.
