More Than 572,000 Voters Have Returned Their 2020 Primary Ballots

Washingtonians have until March 10 to cast votes in the presidential primary. State records show about 12.6% of ballots have been received.

SEATTLE, WA — With a dozen days left before 2020 presidential primary ballots are due, more than half a million Washingtonians have already cast their votes. According to the latest numbers from the Secretary of State's office, more than 572,000 ballots were received across the state by Wednesday afternoon, accounting for about 12.6 percent of all registered voters.

Elections officials in King and Pierce counties are projecting 40 percent voter turnout by Election Day. King County Elections said it expected higher-than-usual voter participation, due in large part to state Democrats using the primary results to assign delegates for the first time.

According to the Seattle Times, Washington has held presidential primaries for both parties since 1992, but Democrats have relied on caucuses to determine delegates for the national convention until this year.

In 2019, Gov. Jay Inslee signed legislation moving Washington's primary up two months, placing the election one week after Super Tuesday.

  • The last day to register or update voter information online or by mail is March 2. All eligible voters can register in-person at a voting center through Election Day.
  • Election officials recommend mailing ballots no later than Friday, March 6, to ensure they arrive in time to be counted. Stamps are not required.
  • Ballots must be returned to a dropbox, postmarked or dropped off in person by March 10. The polls close at 8 p.m.
