Northgate Mall Will Lose Another Major Retailer
The Northgate Macy's will close by 2020, according to reports.

SEATTLE, WA - The Northgate Macy's store will close by 2020, according to reports. This follows news that the JCPenney at the mall will close this year.
A Macy's spokesperson told the Seattle Times the decision to leave Northgate after 70 years was a "difficult one."
In January 2017, Macy's announced it would close 68 stores nationwide, including the stores in Everett and Kelso. In February, Macy's announced it would close the Redmond store. That location's clearance sale is going on now.

The announcement comes as the mall's owner plans a major redevelopment that leaves little room at Northgate for big retailers like Macy's and JCPenney. Simon plans to turn Northgate into a mixed-use development with up to seven residential towers, four office towers, and a hotel.
Some pieces of the old mall would remain, like the spaces that house Forever 21, Barnes and Noble, Ulta Beauty, and the Ram Restaurant and Brewery. The mall first opened in 1950.

There are at least nine other Macy's department stores across Puget Sound that will remain open, including locations at the Bellevue Square, Alderwood, and Southcenter malls.
