SEATTLE, WA — The region's two biggest upscale grocery stores will open new stores in West Seattle within a week of each other.

Early Thursday morning, Whole Foods said it would open a long-anticipated store near the Alaska Junction on Oct. 9. A few hours later, PCC said its new store along California Avenue would open on Oct. 2.

The 45,000 square-foot Whole Foods will be on the first floor of the Whittaker Apartment Complex at 4755 Fauntleroy Way SW, just a few blocks southeast of the Alaska Junction. For the grand opening, Whole Foods will give out tote bags to the first 300 customers stuffed with gift cards, snacks, and other prizes.

PCC's 24,000 square-foot West Seattle store closed down in 2017 to make way for a new mixed-use development. The new store will be located on the first floor of that building at 2749 California Ave. The opening celebration will feature free snacks and live music from the West Seattle High School Band, and the first 112 customers will get a 24 ounce bag of PCC's private-label coffee.
