Prince From Minneapolis Exhibit Travels To Seattle

A new Prince exhibit at MoPOP opens this weekend, featuring artifacts like instruments, clothing, and art inspired by Prince Rogers Nelson.

SEATTLE, WA — As the Seattle area remembers Kurt Cobain on the 25th anniversary of his suicide, a new exhibit is opening at MoPOP covering another music icon — one who also died too young.

The "Prince from Minneapolis" exhibit opens Saturday, and will feature dozens of artifacts from the late musician, who died almost exactly three years ago of an accidental fentanyl overdose.

The exhibit, a partnership with the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis (one that, like MoPOP, was also designed by architect Frank Gehry), will feature instruments, costumes, and original artwork inspired by Prince and his music.

Included in the exhibition is a portrait of Prince made out of seeds by Minnesota artist Lillian Colton, and a Prince-themed bicycle that won an award at the 2017 North American Handmade Bicycle Show. The bike is owned by Anna Schwinn, great-great granddaughter of the founder of the Vancouver-based Schwinn Bicycle Company.

The show will also feature a Prince doll created by Seattle artist Troy Gua (who has said he grew up worshiping the Purple One).

"Prince embodied so many of the themes we like to explore at MoPOP," MoPOPCurator Brooks Peck said in a statement. "He drew on the work of the greats who came before him, yet created his own, truly original style and sound. He defied convention and broke boundaries, and he continues to inspire musicians and artists of all kinds to this day."
