Puget Sound NHL Franchise: Team Application Filed

A group of billionaires on Tuesday applied to bring an NHL franchise to Seattle, according to the Seattle mayor.

SEATTLE, WA - The Puget Sound region is one step closer to getting an NHL franchise. A group of billionaires who plan to remodel Key Arena filed an application with the NHL Tuesday for a Seattle franchise team, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said this afternoon.

Oak View Group members Jerry Bruckheimer and David Bonderman paid the $10 million application fee, the Seattle Times reported Tuesday. The NHL will allow the applicants to start selling season tickets in 2018.

Seattle city officials and the Los Angeles-based Oak View Group signed a memorandum of understanding in December to redevelop Key Arena. Oak View Group will spend over $600 million on renovations to make the arena attractive to pro NHL and NBA teams.
