Reading Eggs Shares Fun Tips for Reading at Home with Kids
Literacy expert Sheila Robitaille suggests extending the learning day at school by reading at home with your child

It’s National Reading Month in March and literacy experts from Reading Eggs have some tips for how parents can have more fun at home while reading to their kids.
Sheila Robitaille is a literacy expert at 3P Learning and Reading Eggs. We asked her for some activities that parents and guardians could do with children to help reinforce what they are learning at school.
Reading is fun at any time, said Robitaille, “but kids love it when Mom or Dad make it a game.” One of her suggestions is to let kids be the teacher while parents pretend to be the student. “A little role-reversal gives them a chance to show off their skills,” she said. She reminds parents that this isn’t quite so easy to do sometimes. “The hard part is not correcting them, just get into the playacting of being a kid and enjoy the moment.”

Robitaille also said that the television or streaming shows can be a help here. Turn on the subtitles to a favorite show and have your child read along while it plays.
“Like any skill, the more senses involved, the deeper the learning,” she said. “That’s why mixing up games and activities around reading time can supercharge the fun while embedding those skills a little more deeply,” she added.

National Reading Month began over 60 years ago through Reading is Fundamental. It has been a celebration of reading for families and communities ever since. In schools, many teachers celebrate Read Across America, which started out as a single day event and has since become a year-round mission for the National Education Association.
3P Learning, the publishers of Reading Eggs, is a national sponsor of Read Across America. Chief Product Officer and publisher, Katy Pike, said that “ every child deserves the chance to become a confident reader. Working with Read Across America allows us to amplify that mission and support educators in creating classrooms where a love of reading can truly flourish.”
