WASHINGTON — Deception Pass will play host to a special New Year's Eve celebration this year, offering Western Washington families a way to get outdoors and ring in 2022 in a way they will not soon forget.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission joined forces with the Deception Pass Park Foundation to organize the festivities, with events planned both New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

The park's West Beach parking lot will host a campout on Dec. 31, with a slate of fun activities and programs planned. Organizers encourage those interested in the campout to register early, and the window closes on Dec. 26.

For the brave, the next morning's schedule includes a Puffin Plunge. That event has a suggested $10 donation to support the Fidalgo Nature School.

After the plunge, staffers will lead two 45-minute hikes along the Sand Dune Interpretive Trail, with plenty of snacks and warm drinks on hand.
