With seven seats in play, the outcome of this year's city council election will determine the future of Seattle.

SEATTLE, WA — The outcome of Tuesday's election will present very different paths forward for Seattle, with seven city council seats up for grabs. Four incumbents are retiring and did not seek re-election. Three others face staunch opposition amid growing disapproval over the council's performance. No matter what happens, City Hall is in for a shakeup.

Amazon and other groups have poured more than $1.5 million into the election, backing more moderate, business-friendly candidates and prompting backlash from progressives. The showdown has attracted national attention and prompted two presidential candidates to weigh in.

Tuesday night's first ballot drop provides an early indicator of how things are shaping up, but the numbers do not include ballots postmarked or put in dropboxes Tuesday. The Secretary of State's Office will release updated counts daily, as additional votes are tallied. Early results showed two incumbents —Herbold and Juarez — leading their races, with Kshama Sawant trailing Egan Orion in District 3.
