Seattle voters approved the Building Excellence V Capital Levy (BEX V) in 2019, including funding for the construction project to replace Asa Mercer International Middle School with a new multi-story middle school. When completed, it will provide permanent space for up to 1,000 students grades 6-8. BEX V funding will also provide technology equipment and services, such as computers, printers, and other technology for teaching and learning.
Construction on the new middle school building is scheduled to begin Summer 2023 and take two years. During construction, Mercer International Middle School will be located at the Van Asselt School Interim Site, 7201 Beacon Ave. S. A BEX V-funded addition is being constructed at that location to convert it to a site large enough for temporary use by middle schools.
