Space Needle Time Capsule Opened: Here's What Was Inside

Workers renovating the Space Needle found a 35-year-old time capsule. They opened it on Friday morning.

SEATTLE, WA - It wasn't exactly Al Capone's vaults, but a 35-year-old time capsule found at the Space Needle recently did contain some relics. The capsule, a steel box, was hidden in the observation deck. Workers found it while renovating the iconic structure.

The capsule was hidden in 1982, the 20th anniversary of the Space Needle's opening. It was supposed to be opened in April 2002 on the building's 40th birthday, but no one remembered to do it.

Space Needle workers opened the lid Friday morning, and here are some of the things inside:

  • A poster from the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle
  • A work order signed by Bill Johanknecht, father of King County Sheriff-elect Mitzi Johanknecht
  • Blueprints for the restaurant at the top of the Space Needle
  • Ticket stubs from 1982
  • Pictures and letters from Space Needle employees
  • A length of structural cable
