Thieves Caught On Rainier Avenue With Stolen Bed, Mattress

The two thieves tried to make their getaway across Rainier Avenue, one of the city's most hectic streets.

SEATTLE, WA - In what might be one of the worst criminal escape attempts in Seattle history, two thieves were arrested in Thursday in the middle of Rainier Avenue after trying to steal a bed and mattress. The theft happened from Dixon's Furniture along the 1900 block of Rainier Avenue at around 4 p.m. Thursday, according to Seattle police.

Here's what Seattle police say happened:

A 64-year-old man entered Dixon's and tried to use a check to buy some furniture. The owner told the man that the store doesn't accept checks. Dejected, the 64-year-old went outside and stood in front until he was joined by another man.

Then, the two men together grabbed a mattress and bed frame, and tried to run away across Rainier Avenue, which, in front of Dixon's, is five lanes wide (counting the center turning lane).

The owner of Dixon's chased the men and was able to grab the mattress (meanwhile, he was on the phone with 911). Police arrived and arrested to the two would-be thieves on suspicion of robbery.
