Thursday Deadline To Remove Studded Tires In Washington

Starting Friday, vehicles still equipped with studded tires on Washington roadways will be subject to $136 fines.

WASHINGTON — Another sign of the changing of the seasons arrives Thursday, as March 31 marks the annual deadline for drivers to remove studded tires before they could be subject to fines.

Washington state law permits studded tires only between Nov. 1 and March 31 to help preserve roadways from unnecessary damage. While the Washington State Department of Transportation can choose to extend the window when warranted, officials said that would be unnecessary this year.

"State law gives WSDOT the authority to extend the dealing when circumstances call for it, most commonly when a forecast indicates widespread snow and ice," the department wrote this month. "While late season storms are possible in the mountain passes, there are no forecasted statewide conditions that would all for an extension of the deadline."

For travelers who have upcoming trips planned over the Cascades, WSDOT recommends utilizing approved traction tires and carrying chains, should the need arise. Drivers who miss the deadline could be subject to $136 fines starting Friday — a date the Evergreen State shares in common with Oregon.

Residents can learn more about Washington's tire regulations via WSDOT's website.
