Washington Has The Best Economy In U.S., Study Says

The report follows another recent report that says Washington is the No. 2 best state in the U.S. for jobs.

SEATTLE, WA — Another week, another study shows that Washington has one of the best economies in the U.S.

This week, the personal finance site WalletHub is back with data showing that Washington has the best economy of any state in America. In a study released in late May, WalletHub said that Washington has the No. 2 best job market in the country (Massachusetts came in No. 1).

Washington bested Utah, California, Colorado, and Massachusetts for the No. 1 spot. According to data gathered from a host of sources, including the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Here's how Washington ranked in the top categories:

  • No. 1 for GDP growth
  • No. 1 for exports per capita
  • No. 10 for startup activity
  • No. 4 for percent of jobs in high-tech industries
  • No. 18 for annual median household income
  • No. 5 for change in non-farm payrolls
  • No. 11 for government surplus/deficit per capita

Alaska, Louisiana, and Mississippi were the bottom three states. Washington's overall economic score, as calculated by WalletHub, was 77.60. The bottom three states had scores around 28.5.
