Washington's Favorite Halloween Candy? It's A Weird One

The website Candy Store measured the best-selling Halloween candy in each state. Washington's is a bit old-fashioned.

SEATTLE, WA - Think back to your childhood. When you went trick-or-treating, weren't you always looking for people giving out full-size candy bars or other premium candies (Reese's, Snickers, Sour Patch Kids, etc.) Well, trick-or-treaters in Washington today are more likely to get a nearly 100-year-old style of lollipop than one of those premium candies, according to one analysis.

Tootsie Pops are the most-bought candy around Halloween time in the state, according to the retail website Candy Store.

Tootsie Pops? There's nothing wrong with Tootsie Pops, but of all the choices out there, it seems strange. Even stranger: we bought 223,850 pounds of Tootsie Pops for Halloween between 2007 and 2016. A single Tootsie Pop weighs about 1 gram. Do the math, and that means we've bought more than 101 million Tootsie Pops over the years.

"Maybe Starbucks should stock them as stirrers for their coffee drinks!" Candy Store commented.

Candy Store also ranked the second and third most-bought Halloween candies by Washington residents. Salt water taffy came in second (OK?), and Hershey's Kisses came in No. 3.

The selection might mean we're a little cheap when it comes to Halloween candy. Candy Store sells a 200-count box of Tootsie Pops for $20. A box of 36 Reese's Peanut Butter Cups costs $36.
