Weekend Traffic Forecast: Prepare For Highway Closures

Two freeways, including SR 99 and U.S. 2, will be closed this weekend, and others will see lane reductions.

SEATTLE, WA - This weekend's traffic forecast includes multiple highway closures and lane reductions, and a number of large events in Seattle that will only make traffic worse.

The biggest problems will likely be the southbound closure of SR 99 in Seattle, and the closure of U.S. 2 east of Everett. On top of that, Seattle Pride and a Seattle Sounders match will bring loads of people into the city.

Here are the traffic problems to avoid this weekend according to WSDOT:

  • Seattle Pride is going on all weekend. The main parade begins Sunday morning at 11 a.m. in downtown Seattle at 4th Avenue and Union Street.
  • The Seattle Sounders will face off against the Chicago Fire at 7 p.m. Saturday at CenturyLink Field.
  • Lane and exit closures along I-5 northbound in Tacoma all weekend due to work on HOV lanes.
  • US 2 Hewitt Avenue trestle will be fully closed from 7 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday for paving work. Detours are set for those going from east Snohomish County to Everett.
  • 24/7 lane reductions and traffic shifts on westbound I-90 will cause big travel delays for people heading either direction over Snoqualmie Pass.
  • All lanes of southbound State Route 99 through downtown Seattle will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday for work related to the SR 99 Tunnel project. Know your alternate routes before you leave home.
  • The lower Spokane Street Bridge in Seattle, which connects Sodo, Harbor Island, and West Seattle, will remain closed due to emergency repairs.
